LIHUE — Councilman Bernard Carvalho Jr. announced his run for Kauai mayor last Wednesday.
On May 14, Carvalho made his official announcement during his ‘Together We Can’ event held at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihue, where he shared his community vision.
“I was born and raised on the beautiful island of Kauai, “said Carvalho. “I’ve walked these streets, played the fields, worshipped at these churches, and of course stood side by side with many of you right here, through the good times and of course the hardest ones we’ve walked together.
“I know this island because it raised me, and everything I’ve ever done in public service, in leadership, and in life has been for the people of Kauai. I humbly announce that I am running to serve once again as your mayor,” he said.
Various supporting messages on his Facebook page from excited residents, including supporters from Oregon and Texas, read, “Proud of all you’ve done for Kauai. “
Carvalho is a council member who served as Kauai’s mayor from 2008 through 2018.

Mr. Carvalho is a nice gentleman and has served Kaua’i proudly over the years. It is time to move on. Political positions are a public service position, not a lifelong career. Please step aside and let someone else with possibly fresher, forward-thinking ideas run for Mayor. With all due respect, please reconsider running for Mayor yet again. Kaua’i deserves something new, not the same old thing.
Be Kauai, I say. The demands for Kauai since I was born are no laughing matter. Who possibly fills the “Void” will get my vote of fifty years. Carvalho and I went to college together in Manoa couple decades ago and worked and played there. He is qualified and same I can say of some others. Who will also step forward to make Kauai will be interesting.
