Laurinda Leiaulani ‘Gma Lei’ Werner Cano
Laurinda Leiaulani “Gma Lei” Werner Cano, passed away at KVMH on April 11, 2025. She was born on June 15, 1943, in Nanakuli, Oahu. She was a retired custodian at Waimea Canyon School.
She was preceded in death by her husband Frank Palani Cano Jr., parents Mary Mahuka-Werner and Edward Brown, grandson Dwayne Rita, siblings Calvin “Nunu” Werner, Ewalani Combs, James Kimo Werner and Barney Boy Werner.
Gma Lei is survived by her six children Francine “Mz Fran” Oligo, Frank “Bully” (Judy) Cano, Franchot “Hawaiian” (Pamai) Cano, Francisco “Mauna” (Pomai) Cano, Francella “Napua” (Lloyd) Rita, Francford Kinonui “Bradda” (Jamie) Cano, 14 grandchildren Kaliko (Jessa) Oligo, Noelani (Riley) Refamonte, Thomas (Kayla) Clementino, Jade Cano, Savannah Cano, Amanda Rita, Bradley (Brennan) Cano, Samuel (Bri) Cano, Quinlan Cano, Xavier Cano, Saige Cano, Kinohi Cano, Keahi Cano, seven great-grandchildren Hunter Furtado-Oligo, StarrLee Furtado-Oligo, Kaleah Oligo, Hadley Oligo, Evelyn Clementino, Rio Keao Cano, Kaius Kaimana Cano, siblings Leonae Keala Rodrigues, Charles Papoko Mahuka and John Mahuka.
Beloved close family friends Grace, Kathy, Beverly, Kristen and her son Keewe, the Laulea Hawai‘i Pidgin Local Hui of Witnesses fo Jehovah. Mahalo for all your support.
Memorial service will be on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses located at 8833 Kaumualii Hwy, Kekaha HI 96752. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. with service to follow from 3:30 to 4 p.m. Aloha attire is suggested. Flowers omitted.
The entire Cano ohana would like to give a special thanks to KVMH, the nursing staff, home care workers, Kauai Care Center and close special friends for all their dedication and support during this journey with Gma Lei. Setsuo Ushio
Setsuo Ushio, of Lihue, passed away on his 91st birthday on April 29, 2025. He was born in Pahoa, Hawaii, on April 29, 1934. He retired as a school administrator from the Hawaii Department of Education and was an Army veteran discharged at the rank of Captain.
He was preceded in passing by his parents Hikoichi and Yoshiko Ushio, sisters Kay Yamamoto and Chiyoko Kami, and brother Masahiko Ushio.
Setsuo is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Edith Ushio, daughter Shelly (William Lew Tan) Ushio of Los Angeles, son Elton (Dawn) Ushio of Lihue, grandchildren Meredith and Douglas Lew Tan, Gavin, Keegan, and Evan Ushio, and siblings Yoshiichi Ushio and Kikuko Sato.
Private services will be held by the immediate family. The family requests no koden or flowers. Donations may be made in his name to Lihue Hongwanji Mission or Wilcox Medical Center.

Laverne R. Bukoski
Laverne R. Bukoski, 75, passed away peacefully on Dec. 31, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Lihue, Kauai, on March 18, 1949.
Laverne leaves behind her devoted husband of 56 years, Nolan Bukoski, her son Joel (Tracy) Bukoski, granddaughters Caitlyn N. Bukoski and Kierstyn A. Bukoski, as well as numerous cherished family members and many dear friends.
During her long career within the state’s library system, she touched countless hearts. Her passion for reading and learning was extraordinary. She approached life with an open heart, offering unconditional love and bringing joy, laughter, and knowledge to all who knew her. Her true wealth was the love she shared so freely.
She was the embodiment of motherhood, love, friendship, compassion, strength, and resilience. Her love, strength, smile, and compassion leave a lasting legacy.
The family wishes to express our sincere gratitude to the dedicated care team at KVMH LTC. The consistently attentive care that your staff provided brought precious comfort and dignity to Laverne. We also extend our sincere thanks to Bruce at Garden Island Mortuary for his guidance and compassion.
Wilfred Kuali‘i III
Wilfred Kuali‘i III, of Lihu‘e, passed away on March 12, 2025, at the age of 91. He was born in Kalaupapa, Moloka‘i, on Oct. 1, 1933, and worked as a Paniolo (Cowboy) at KipuKai Ranch and numerous jobs at Grove Farm and Lihu‘e Plantations.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Patricia Ann Carvalho Kuali‘i, parents Red and Melapa May Corr, sisters Barbara Velasquez, Goldie Mae Kahale, Colleen Okamoto, Aletha Matsusaka, brothers James Corr Jr. and Richard Corr.
Wilfred is survived by his brothers Charles (Jean) Corr, John (Sandy) Corr, daughters Sandra Mae Hokulani (Alan Yamashiro) Kuali‘i, Debra Jean Ualani (Ron Silva Jr.) Kuali‘i, sons KipuKai Leslie Patrick (Joe Carrillo) Kuali‘i, Alan Brian Pono (Tiana Pangan) Kuali‘i, Kurt Kalani (Michele) Kuali‘i, Kris Kawika (Kaina) Lovell Kuali‘i, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at Immaculate Conception Church. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m., Program at 9 a.m. and Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will take place at Kauai Memorial Gardens later in the day.
Please bring your instruments and voices to participate in the “kanikapila” part of program. Leis are welcome but not necessary.

Michael Lee Womack
Michael Lee Womack, 77, of Kapaa, passed away at home on April 10, 2025. He was born on Dec. 8, 1947, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was a retired Master Sergeant of the Hawaii Air National Guard and co-owner of Kauai Electronics, Inc.
He was preceded in passing by his parents Sakae and Alice Hatakeyama and brother Michael Hatakeyama.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, April Womack, daughters Leslie (Lee Gusman) Womack, Michele (Danny Rego) Womack, grandson Joshua Rego, sisters Sharon Contrades of Kapaa, Joy (Les Koshi) Hatakeyama of Honolulu, sister-in-law Darlene Hatakeyama of Washington, brothers-in-law Dennis Yoshihara of California, Gordon Yoshihara of Kapaa, Wayne Yoshihara of Kapaa, as well as numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at All Saints Episcopal Church in Kapaa. Visitation from 9 to 11 a.m., with services to follow.

Lynn T. Seto
Lynn T. Seto, 79, of Waimea, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on April 4, 2025. He was a mechanic and owner of Seto’s Repair Service in Waimea.
He was preceded in the passing by his parents Tadao and Haruko Seto.
Lynn is survived by his wife Jane Seto, daughters Tana (Grant) Okamura, Jodi (Caleb) Silva, siblings Eddie (Lorraine) Seto, Gary Seto, Mae Kinoshita, grandchildren Jaelyn (Trevor) and Tanner Okamura, Ashley (Dylan) Hookano, Caleb Silva Jr. and great-grandchildren Ariana, Ashlyn and Tyson.
His celebration of life will be held at Garden Island Mortuary on Saturday, May 24, 2025, with visitation at 11 a.m. and service 12 p.m.
