HONOLULU — The Lions Clubs of Hawaii, or District 50, in partnership with the Hawaii Foodbank, The Food Basket, Maui Food Bank, and the Kauai Independent Food Bank announce the Spring Food Drive that will take place on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at various locations on each of the Neighbor Islands.
On Kauai, the Walmart in Lihue is the participating location where volunteers will join others around the state in collecting and accepting canned good and other nonperishable items such as water, juice, hot and cold cereal, oatmeal, snacks, canned fruits and vegetables, pasta, canned sauce and rice.
Many families in Hawaii have difficulty putting food on their table, the Lions Club statewide said. This is especially a challenge when people are struggling to make ends meet.
“You can be part of the Lions’ effort by making a difference, helping those that really need help,” said Lion Irwin, the Hawaii Lions public relations chairman. “Hawaii’s food banks continually need to have its inventory replenished. Canned foods are the Most Wanted items that supply the food pantries, feeding programs, homeless and abuse shelters, rehabilitation centers and soup kitchens.”
Through a network, island food banks and their local food pantries and meal programs provide food assistance to more than 123,000 households encompassing 287,000 island residents — or one in six island residents — including 82,420 keiki and more than 46,000 kupuna.
“Monetary donations will be accepted, and very much appreciated at the drop-off areas,” Irwin said. “Cash is welcomed. Every $10 donated enables the food banks to distribute 25 meals a day. Please make your tax deductible checks payable to ‘Hawaii Foodbank,’ or ‘Kauai Independent Food Bank.’ Virtual donations can be done through https://fundraise.givesmart.com/vf/CFD/HawaiiLions.”
The International Association of Lions Clubs is known for their motto of “We serve.” Hawaii Lions statewide bring about many positive changes in our communities by implementing and completing projects that help to improve and support a variety of efforts to sustain the livelihood of these communities.
