KAPAA—The Kapaa High School and Kauai High School tennis programs won their series on Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation tennis matches, which were played at the Kapaa High School courts and the Hanapepe tennis courts.
The Warriors, hosting Island School at its home courts, swept the day with 5-0 wins in both the boys’ and girls’ matches.
The Menehune, hosting Kauai High School, played its matches at the Hanapepe tennis courts because Cook Field and the Waimea High School tennis courts are closed for improvement projects, including the resurfacing of the tennis courts. Kauai High School took the series with the Red Raider ladies shutting out the Menehune, 5-0, and the Red Raider boys edging out the Menehune, three matches to 2.
On the singles court at Hanapepe, Kauai’s Laney Carvalho defeated Waimea’s Emma Giurao, 6-1, 6-1 on Girls No. 1 Singles, and Red Raider Lily Corpuz was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Mariana Lee on the Girls No. 2 Singles court.
On the doubles courts, Kauai’s Taylee Yoshimoto teamed with Mia Marty to shut down Waimea’s duo of Vivien Colcol and Kianna Michaud, 6-0, 6-0 in Girls First Doubles. On the Second Doubles arena, Kauai’s Samantha Tominaga and Sharba Holi were 6-0, 6-0 winners over the Menehune duo of Branlee Vidinha and Giulia Mannoni.
The Kauai girls gave up their only set in the Third Doubles. Kauai’s Kira Fuchigame and Kaya Hughes defeated the Waimea pair of Kierra Atwood and Madeline Clarke, 6-0, 6-1.
Waimea’s victories came on the boys’ singles court following competitive matches.
Menehune Swede Sandblom downed Kauai’s Aaron Hinazumi, 6-2, 6-2 on the Boys First Singles court, and Menehune Edison Medina needed a third set to get past Kauai’s Graydon Rosenthal, 7-6 (3), 4-6 and 15-17.
The Boys Doubles belonged to Kauai High School boys who survived a competitive round in the Hanapepe heat. The Red Raider First Doubles pair of Shousei Kai and Robert Bishop needed three sets to get past Waimea’s Kalen Shimatsu and Anthony Udarbe, 6-3, 1-6, and 11-9.
On the Boys’ Second Doubles, the Kauai duo of Cody Torres and Micah Hinazumi prevailed over Waimea’s Aidan Kakuda and Gian Carlo Gawaran, 6-3, 6-3. Kauai High School closed a winning day when Boys Third Doubles’ Connor Kellogg and Kana Potts took a 6-0, 6-0 series over the Menehune duo of Emerson Ochua and Breindon Medina.
Over at the busy Kapaa High School campus where the Warriors hosted the first KIF qualifying track meet, the tennis matches, and practice for the Warriors’ softball, the Warrior tennis teams balanced the schedule to manage its spring prom on time.
The Warrior boys and girls were 5-0 winners over Island School, where the girls were given the option of first play.
Kapaa’s Girls First Singles player Ocean Amador prevailed over Lady Voyager Lilah Hamid, 7-6 (9/7) and 6-4. On the Second Singles court, Lady Warrior Wai Kitamura defeated Lady Voyager Nola Bown, 6-3, 6-4.
Kapaa’s team of Chloe Hannsz and Rain Hannsz defeated the Island School pair of Annie Harris and I‘iwi Silva, 6-0, 6-1 on the Girls First Doubles floor, and Kapaa’s pair of Nalea Tom and Chelcie Domingo downed Lady Voyagers Mirka Kocak and Maylen Ventura, 6-3, 6-4. The Lady Warriors swept the girls’ competition when the Kapaa pair of Andrea Fernandez and Rian Yamamoto defeated the Island School duo of Emily Racpan and Lila Nakayma, 6-4, 6-2.
On the boys’ courts, Warrior First Singles Ryan Murata was 6-0, 6-0 winner over Ryan Biederman, and Second Singles Louis Reale defeated Voyager Jeremy Harris, 6-2, 6-1.
The Kapaa Boys First Doubles team of Jason Muramaru and Luka Lasky-Martin prevailed over the Island School duo of Ikaika Havas and Bodhi Czarski, 7-5, 6-1. The Warrior Boys Second Doubles team of Curren Pope and Keola Maroney defeated the Voyager duo of Logan Reynolds and Orion Magaoay, 6-0, 6-2.
Kapaa wrapped up a successful day on the courts when Boys Third Doubles’ Matthew Asuncion and Kainoa Danner defeated the Voyager pair of Max Fazio and Sebastian Sanchez, 6-0, 6-2.
The next round of KIF Tennis takes place from 9 a.m. on Saturday when Waimea visits Kapaa at the Kapaa tennis courts on campus, and Kauai High School hosts Island School at its new facility on campus.
