Several hundred women gathered at the Kauai Community College on Saturday to celebrate the achievements and accomplishments of women.
The unifying thread was the screening of a documentary, Rise of the Wahine, coordinated by the Kauai Committee on the Status of Women and various community partners, including the Zonta Club of Kauai, the Kauai Community College, and the YWCA of Kauai.
The group was joined by about 50 people representing Kauai Indivisible waving signs and chanting along Kaumualii Highway and lending their support for women and achievements by women, including the late Patsy Takemoto Mink and her achievements in Title IX and gender equity, particularly in sports.
Kauai Indivisible advocated for Voting and Voter Rights before the elections. Since then, its visibility has changed, including concerns about democracy in America. For more information on the group, visit its website, www.indivisibleKauai.org. More recently, Kauai Indivisible created first aid kits during the Peace Day observance coordinated by the Interfaith Roundtable of Kauai and the Kauai Pride parade.
Kauai County Council member Bernard Carvalho Jr. had a prior commitment to hosting the Prayer Luncheon for more than 800 people. Still, he arrived in time to view the film and support the groups collected in the lobby of the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center.
Additional support came from the appearance of the forensic nurses from the Kauai Police Department and the Kauai Community College Chancellor, who brought her daughter visiting from California to view the film and network with the public.
Other supporters who heartily lent their support were tied up at the HerbieGives Foundation Second Football Camp, particularly the Girls Football Camp that followed the inaugural girls’ flag football games hosted by the Kauai Interscholastic Federation on Thursday. The camp was sponsored by Kauai boys Nate and Nick Herbig of the National Football League Pittsburgh Steelers and their football player buddies.
