ANAHOLA — Retired doctor Arnie Serota of Kilauea made it a point to personally ensure the installation of the Automated External Defibrillator at the Anahola Marketplace on Friday afternoon.
“This is the first AED in Anahola,” Serota announced. “Actually, the Ocean Safety Bureau lifeguards have an AED, but it’s only accessible while they’re working.”
The new AED is being installed at the Anahola Cafe food court near the stage. Its high visibility and location in a popular area ensure that access is available to those who need it.
Serota said the AED placement, which has a combined value of about $2,000, was made possible through the efforts of several groups, including the North Shore Give Foundation, the Zonta Club of Hanalei, and the Hawaii Heart Foundation.
Serota said he offers cardiopulmonary or CPR training for people and groups that need to be certified in training.
“North Shore Give wanted their group trained,” Serota said. “Following the training, they wanted to pay me, but I suggested that Anahola needs an AED. The Zonta Club of Hanalei wanted to gift the AED to help everyone in Anahola, and the Hawaii Heart Foundation came up with the case. For those needing Serota’s CPR training, he can be reached by email at arnieserota@gmail.com or by phone at 808-635-5696.
