NUMILA — The Kauai Coffee Fair Trade Committee need some help in getting out funds derived from the sales of Kauai Coffee under the Fair Trade guidelines.
“At the heart of our mission is a deep-rooted commitment to giving back to our community. Through our Fair Trade certification, we not only ensure the highest standards in our coffee production, but also actively contribute to the betterment of the community around us,” said the committee that includes many Kauai Coffee Company employees.
Each year, the Kauai Coffee Fair Trade Committee allocates a portion of the company’s earnings toward community initiatives that support the community.
“We believe in creating a positive impact that extends beyond our fields and facilities, enriching the lives of those of our local community,” the committee said. “This decision is made by a collection of Kauai Coffee employees. Our vision is to foster sustainable development and empower the communities where the hard-working Kauai Coffee employees who make this all possible live with their families.”
The applications are being accepted from Feb. 5 and applications will be accepted until March 7. There are no exceptions.

In accordance with Fair Trade USA standards, applicants can apply if the following criteria are met. You are a registered nonprofit; you are based on the island of Kauai; you can specify what the funding will be used for in 2025; the project will have a direct and measurable impact on the local community; and your nonprofit is in good standing with the Internal Revenue Service, or other relevant authorities.
Once eligibility criteria are met, the Kauai Coffee Fair Trade Committee is seeking to fund projects related to the following categories and subcategories:
Education: adult and continuing education classes for members; financial assistance (i.e, school fees, scholarships, loans, bursaries); school supplies (books, uniforms, etc.); professional development for educators; tutoring; salaries and school operation costs (teacher salaries, maintenance costs, etc); and infrastructure (buildings, laptops; wifi, etc.).
Social Service: Care services (childcare, eldercare, etc); Subsidized shop or provision goods; transportation (free or subsidized transportation, disability transportation, etc); Recreational Activities (parks, sports, fitness, clubs, tourism); family welfare services (parental support, advice and guidance, etc.); Goods and services for workers and families; Gender and Equity programs; Community Philanthropy or Service.
Basic Needs: Sanitation facilities (toilets, etc); Waste Management (trash collection, recycling facilities, etc); Food and Nutrition (food distribution, reduced cost food, essentials for newborns, children in a household); access to water (well-building maintenance, running water, infrastructure); secure shelter; others.
Healthcare: General Care (General practice, substance abuse, vision care, dental care, pediatric care, etc.); Transportation for healthcare; Emergency/Urgent Care; Mental Heath Services; Preventative Care (nutrition, community education, advice and guidance, etc.); Heath Insurance Access; Medication and Prescription (subsidized medication, access to medication); Women’s Healthcare (OBGYN, Prenatal, Mammograms and Ovarian Cancer Screenings, HPV, Hepatitis B vaccination and sexually transmitted disease prevention); General vaccinations (e.g. flu shots, etc.); Other.
Housing: Access to housing (worker housing provision, etc.); New Housing (planning, development, construction, etc.); Financial Support (mortgages, home improvement loads, home insurance, etc.); Emergency housing (disaster relief housing, migrant housing, etc.); Other,
Environment: Climate Change Mitigation/Adaptation (clean energy, agroforestry, etc.); Waste Disposal/Recycling; Crop Diversification; Wast Management (trash collection, recycling facilities, etc.); Pest Management; Clean Water; Sustainability Efforts; Others.
Financial Support/Economic Welfare: Disaster relief funds (emergency grants, etc.); Economic Security; Standard of living; Oher.
