PUHI — Susan Pittman of Clayworks at Kilohana said Wednesday that the bowls for Souper Sunday should be ready on Friday.
“Souper Bowl Sunday is happening,” Pittman said. “The handmade bowls are in the kiln for glazing. They should be ready by Friday.”
Souper Bowl Sunday is a longtime event that coincides with the National Football League Super Bowl. This year’s event is Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans with local television live coverage starting at 1:30 p.m. Hawaii time.
For a donation, Souper Bowl patrons receive a handmade bowl filled with homemade soup. Patrons can enjoy the soup in the garden workshop in the back of the Clayworks, or can take it to-go for enjoyment at a Super Bowl viewing site. Whichever option a patron chooses, the handmade bowl is theirs to keep.
Proceeds from Souper Bowl Sunday benefit the Lihue Lutheran Church Mobile Munchies program.
Souper Bowl Sunday opens at 10:30 a.m. and runs until 1 p.m.
“My son, Jason Pittman, will prepare a pot of soup because the Kilohana eating places are closed on Sundays since COVID,” Susan Pittman said. “In addition to Jason’s creation, several ladies from the Lihue Lutheran Church offered to have crock pots of soup going, so there are varieties patrons can choose from.”
During previous Souper Sunday events, people could call ahead of time or come into the Clayworks showroom to select a preferred bowl. However, Pittman said they have discontinued that.
“Simply come in on Sunday from 10:30 a.m. and choose your bowl,” she said. “I’m so happy that Souper Bowl Sunday is back. I don’t know how long we’ve been doing this, but I know it’s been a long time.”
The Lihue Lutheran Church Mobile Munchies program delivers hand-prepared brown bag snacks to more than 325 meals from the West Side to Lihue every week. Volunteers prepare each brown bag snack that includes a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, a granola bar and fresh carrots.
