KAPAA — Kauai High School boys basketball announced itself with a 20-7 showing over Island School on Tuesday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation boys basketball games.
Over at the new Kauai High School gymnasium, Island School outpointed the Raiders 19-10 in the final stanza, but the Voyagers came up short, 59-40 at the buzzer.
Voyager Matt Dobashi, in the absence of Lucas Summerhays on the roster, fired off 15 points, including a pair of treys in the fourth quarter to lead the Island School effort. Orion Magaoay added eight points, and Piko Vaughn launch a trey in the opening frame toward his seven-point contribution.
Double-threat guard Reese Jenkins led the Red Raider offensive after peeling off a game-high 22 points that included four treys being launched. Tall post Camren Holt-Ho finished with a dozen points, and Marcus Merrick posted eight points.
Over at the Bernice Hundley Gym on the Kapaa High School campus, the Junior Varsity Warriors were tied 27-27 at the break with the JV Waimea squad. The JV Warriors broke out, 30-13 coming out of the locker rooms, and picked up a 59-40 win.
Kaisen Yanos led the Kapaa JV with 10 points, eight marks dropping in the explosive second half, and Kaleo Gonsalves added seven points. Naki Tuulangavalu finished with six points.
Titus Daligcon topped the JV Menehune scoring with a game-high 16 points, including a pair of long distance buckets. Daniel Oligo finished with nine points, including a pair of treys.
On the varsity hardwoods, the varsity Warriors were limited to just two points in the opening quarter, and never took the lead until a minute remaining in the first half when Warrior Shayden Mandel dropped a pair of three-balls, the first one teasing the twine with 1:03 showing on the break. Mandel finished the night with 12 points, including a trio of treys launched in the second quarter.
Warrior guard Reimel Camacho shot 13 points in the second half to finish with 15 points and lead the Kapaa victory. Warrior senior Austin Green went out with eight points, including a pair of three-balls.
Menehune Mar Ruiz had a lot of hustle to show for his nine points while Jaydon Moises and Mykah Brun were limited to just five points apiece.
Tall man Daniel Kaohelaulii-Kala finished with seven points.
The next KIF boys basketball games take place on Friday when Waimea faces Island School at the Wilcox Gymnasium in a single contest tipping off at 6:30 p.m.
Kapaa will face the Kauai Red Raiders at the new Kauai High School gymnasium when the JV teams tip off starting at 5:30 p.m. The varsity contest starts 20 minutes following the end of the JV contest.
