WAIMEA — Victory in the junior varsity boys basketball eluded the JV Menehune by eight points on Friday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation boys basketball games contested at the Clem Gomes Gym.
Despite the high scoring of eight points from JV Menehune Xyrus Bajo, and seven-point contributions from Kana Huihui-Caberto and Titus Daligcon, the Waimea JV fell, 42-50, to the visiting Kauai High School JV.
Red Raider JV Jose Mikemund blistered the hoop with a game-high 23 points in the victory, including posting nine marks in the first quarter, and a three-ball in the second frame. Asa Bailey helped the win with nine points, including a first-quarter trey that gave the Red Raiders a 31-19 lead at the break.
The momentum created by the JV squad moved the varsity Red Raiders to a 63-49 win to complete the sweep in Waimea.
Tall post Camren Holt Ho set the Kauai pace with a game-high 20 points, and guard Reese Jenkins fueled the momentum with 13 points, including a pair of long distance bombs in the second quarter. Barkley Gilman also fired off a pair of treys en route to finishing with nine points.
Daniel Kaohelaulii-Kala set the scoring pace for the Menehune with 12 points before being buzzed out of the contest. Vincent Lizzio added 11 points, including a trey in the fourth quarter, and Mar Ruiz finished with eight points.
No scores were available for the game at the Wilcox Gymnasium where Kapaa High School faced Island School.
Waimea next faces Kapaa High School today at the Bernice Hundley Gym where the JV match tips off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity contest starting 20 minutes after the JV game ends.
Kauai High School will host Island School at the new Kauai High School gymnasium in a single contest that tips off at 6:30 p.m. today.
