KEKAHA — A collision involving a vehicle and two children on an electric bike on Saturday, remains under investigation on Kauai’s West Side.
Officials with the Kauai Police Department (KPD) reported that at approximately 7 p.m., on Feb. 1, a 2006 Toyota pickup traveling westbound on Kekaha Road collided with an e-bike with two children onboard traveling eastbound.
Kekaha Road was closed in both directions for approximately three hours while officers with the KPD Traffic Safety Section conducted their investigation.
Both children were transported to the Wilcox Medical Center in Lihue, with one in stable condition. The second child was later airlifted to the Kapiolani Medical Center on Oahu and is being treated for life-threatening injuries.
KPD also reported that both keiki were not wearing helmets during the collision. The driver of the pickup, a 58-year-old Kalaheo man, reported no injuries.
Chief Todd Raybuck with the KPD, stated the incident and said: “Our hearts are with the families during this difficult time. KPD’s Traffic Safety Section is thoroughly investigating the cause of the collision, and we ask anyone who may have witnessed the crash to come forward.”
“While speed and impairment do not appear to have been factors, we are committed to gathering all available information,” Raybuck continued. “We urge the community to remain vigilant and continue supporting each other as we work through this investigation.”
Anyone who may have witnessed this collision is encouraged to call Officer Henshaw at 808-241-1616. Individuals wanting to remain anonymous can call CrimeStoppers Kauai at 808-246-8300.
Keiki have been running amok in Kekaha on e-bikes for months, weaving in and out of traffic, doubling up, etc., with no apparent parental supervison and no KPD enforcement. It was just a matter of time until one or more was injured. Thankfully, no fatalities YET.
