HONOLULU — In the latest weather-related change, the Hawaii High School Athletic Association announced the championship game for the Motiv8 Foundation HHSAA Division II state girls soccer championships on Monday, starting at 5 p.m. at the Waipio Soccer Complex.
The possibility of an all-Kauai Interscholastic Federation showdown for the state title exists because, following the results of the Friday quarterfinals, unseeded Waimea High School if facing No. 1 seed Kamehameha Schools-Hawaii (Island), and No. 2 seeded Kauai High School is facing No. 3 seed Mid Pacific Institute in the semifinals match scheduled to start Saturday afternoon.
Victories by the Garden Island Menehune and the Kauai Red Raiders would pit those two teams for the Division II state girls title in the Monday championship.
Unseeded Waimea has been doing well at the state competition. They opened their state climb on Wednesday by edging out No. 5 seed Kailua High School.
Advancing to face the No. 4 seed Seabury Hall on Thursday, Waimea shut down the team from Maui, 2-0 behind a pair of first-half goals — Kendra Suga striking in the fourth minute, and Kailea Itamura finding the net in the sixth minute.
On the lower bracket on Thursday, the No. 2 seeded Kauai girls shut down Waialua High School, 9-0 behind a pair of goals scored by Carly Dela Cru, and Aileah Villatora, and nets from Kyrian Yamase, Jaela Ragsac, Maianna Pinzon, Kylah Caoagas and Coral Turner.
Dela Cruz, who scored first in the first minute of play, added her second goal in the 10th minute as the Kauai girls proceeded to build a 5-0 bulge at the break that was signalled by the Ragsac goal at the 40th minute. Villatora got her first goal in the third minute, and Yamase found the net at the 32nd minute.
The Kauai Red Raiders continued to build on the halftime lead, adding goals from Pinzon in the 53rd minute, Caoagas in the 67th minute, Villatora in the 75th minute, and Turner in the 77th minute.
