LIHUE — Kauai High School boys basketball claimed both the junior varsity and varsity contests, and Kapaa overwhelmed Island School, 69-30, on Tuesday night during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation games.
Playing at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapaa, Warrior Austin Green enjoyed the home court advantage to fire off an evening-high 20 points that included a trio of bombs from outside the three-point arc to lead the Kapaa victory. Helping the win, AJ Johnson finished with 11 points, including a trey, and Emry Piturachsatit added 10 points. CJ Jenkins and Reimel Camacho each tucked away eight points.
Voyager Lucas Summerhays returned to the court following his injury leave and was limited to five points, including one outside ball from beyond the three-point mark. Matt Dobashi finished with high-point honors for the Voyagers with eight points, and Orion Magaoay added seven marks.
Over at the new Kauai High School gymnasium, Kauai JV player Asa Bailey racked up 17 points, including a pair of treys, to lead the JV 44-37 win over the JV Menehune. Julian DeLeon helped fuel the win with 11 points, including a threeball.
Noah Dela Pena set the pace for the JV Menehune with 11 points. Daniel Oligo and Xaiden Buyat each finished with eight points.
On the varsity hardwood, Waimea put on a physical, concerted effort to stop the Kauai running, but came up short as guard Jeydon Moises and Diego Mariano led the effort with eight points apiece. The effort was shared by Eli Ewing and Mar Ruiz who each finished with six points.
The Red Raiders ran free on the floor with Reese Jenkins setting the pace on a game-high 20 points that included a pair of treys. Marcus Merrick, who dropped the winning ball in the final game of the first round, added 17 points that included one bomb from the outside, and tall post Camren Holt-Ho finished with 16 points in the second round opener.
Kauai High School next faces the Voyagers on Friday at the Wilcox Gymnasium in a single contest starting at 6:30 p.m.
Kapaa will face Waimea at the Clem Gomes Gym where the JV contest tips off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity contest starting 20 minutes after the completion of the JV game.
