WAILUA — Kauai High School boys outrigger canoe paddling team picked up its fourth first place on Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation canoe paddling regatta held at the Wailua River.
WAILUA — Kauai High School boys outrigger canoe paddling team picked up its fourth first place on Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation canoe paddling regatta held at the Wailua River.
The Red Raider paddlers almost marked a win in the varsity Mixed division races after eking out a run that stopped the clocks at 3 minutes, 54.76 seconds during the finals of the division. The run was nearly three seconds ahead of the Island School A team that triggered a 3:57.23 run. Kapaa Mixed A team clocked 4:09.50 for third place.
During the boys division race, the Kauai A team was about a second faster than the Kapaa A team. The Red Raiders marked a 3:42.80 finals compared with Kapaa who clocked in at 3:43.19. The Island School A team claimed the No. 3 berth with a 3:58.23 final run.
The Waimea girls A team asserted itself with the only run that broke the 4-minute mark. The Menehune wahine picked up first place after emerging from the finals with a 3:57.52 run. Kapaa’s A team finished in the No. 2 spot with a 4:06.81, and the Island School A team that dominated the long distance regattas finished in third with a 4:11.91 finals run.
In earlier races, Kapaa junior varsity captured top honors in the boys’ races with a run that broke the 4-minute barriers. The Warriors JV finished at 3:59.97 over the Waimea JV boys clocked an unofficial 4:05.56 for the fastest run in that division’s second heat. However, the run is unofficial, giving the division to Kauai High School’s A team who clocked 4:05.82. Island School’s A team marked a 4:16.81 run.
The Island School JV girls topped that division race with a 4:36.44 run, nearly two seconds ahead of the Kapaa JV A team who stopped the clocks at 4:38.59. The Kauai A team followed at 5:03.42.
Kapaa also topped the JV Mixed races with its 4:10.97 run, well ahead of Kauai’s 4:18.90 that was about a second faster than Island School who finished the run at 4:19.74.
The first race in the Saturday regatta at the Wailua River is scheduled for 9 a.m.
