LIHUE — Harold Rosa of the Sons of Kauai motorcycle hui said Sunday was the late Russell Haluapo’s day.
“I even have his picture on my bike,” Rosa said. “Russell always did this. Today is his day.”
Motorcycle riders from the many different motorcycle clubs and independent riders collected at the historic County Building, each rider bringing toys that were loaded into two vans from the Boys &Girls Club of Hawaii’s Kauai clubhouses.
The annual gathering that is held on the second Sunday of December was started by Haluapo and generations before him, brings riders together with the common goal of contributing toys for keiki who would otherwise not have any toys for Christmas.
Toys would be presented to various churches and service organizations providing youth services while the riders took off on a convoy.
This year’s recipient is the Boys &Girls Club of Kauai which will use the toys for holiday programs at its network of three clubhouses: one in Waimea, the Lihue Clubhouse and the Kapaa Clubhouse that is currently being worked on after lease contracts were finalized.
On Saturday evening, the Boys &Girls Club of Hawaii raised approximately $60,000 for Kauai’s keiki through its annual Kanikapila in Paradise fundraiser at Keoki’s Paradise in Poipu.
Hosted by TS Restaurants Legacy of Aloha Foundation and sponsored by the Chan Zuckerberg Kauai Community Fund, more than 200 guests attended the event to help ensure Kauai keiki continue to have mentorship and protection outside of school hours as provided by the Boys &Girls Club of Hawaii.
