LIHUE — Several boaters were rescued after their vessel capsized outside of Nawiliwili Harbor on Tuesday.
The United States Coast Guard announced the successful rescue of five adults after their 15-foot boat capsized outside of Nawiliwili Harbor in Lihue.
On Tuesday at 2:38 p.m., watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu command center received a notification from Coast Guard Station Kauai personnel who overheard a transmission regarding a capsized boat outside the harbor and five adults in need of assistance in the water.
Watchstanders immediately issued an urgent marine information broadcast and directed the launch of Kauai’s station response boat—a 45-foot boat with a medium crew.
The RB-M crew arrived on the scene within 10 minutes of receiving the transmissionand discovered four individuals in the water not wearing any life jackets and another individual on the hull of the boat.
Crew members immediately jumped into action and rescued all five boaters from the water, righted their boat, and placed it in tow.
The five survivors along with their vessel were then transported back to Nawiliwili Boat Harbor. There were no injuries reported.
“We remind all boaters to properly equip their vessels with safety gear, such as life jackets, emergency beacons and reliable communication devices,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Austin J. Santos, communications unit controller, Sector Honolulu command center. “Wearing a life jacket can significantly reduce the risk of drowning during an emergency.”
