Talia Anama of Ruke (permanent jewelry) has been so busy she was not aware of now-Tropical Storm Calvin floating around in the Pacific (the alert day is Wednesday!), and the Beach House Craft Fair coordinator Edwin Vea was already tied up with the early effects of Calvin after rushing to help Bernadette Byrd of Tanline Trading Company (they’re from Kilauea!) hold down her tent in the breezes that upended artist Leslie Frasier’s new pieces.

Young body boarders took advantage of the not-here-yet storm to get in some practice ahead of the Garden Island Boogie Board Classic contest that opens Friday and continues through Sunday at the Prince Kuhio break. Pray for surf from Calvin.
In the meantime, the Miranda family is taking a break from the Koloa Plantation Days Rodeo that traditionally opens the celebration of plantation lifestyles, and in its stead, the opening ceremonies take place ahead of the traditional Hapa Trail Walk (that’s Saturday morning). Kumu Hula Leina‘ala Pavao Jardin will lead the ceremonies on Friday at the Koloa Village shopping center.
And, don’t forget, Wilcox Medical Center hosts the annual free Keiki Bike Safety Day on Saturday starting at 8 a.m. Is it time for a new helmet?
