PUHI — Hosted by the Kaua‘i Filipino Women’s Club, three of the Kaua‘i Filipino Community Council-affiliated Filipino groups — the Pangasinan Association, the Abra Association and the Laoag Saranay Association — joined the Kaua‘i Filipino Women’s Club in distributing more than $8,000 in scholarships during a recent luncheon at The Plantation House by Gaylord’s at Kilohana Plantation.
The donors were joined by 11 scholarship recipients and their guests.
“Our Filipino Women’s Club is so grateful to our Kaua‘i community for supporting the club’s Terno Ball last year,” said Barbara Green, president of the Kaua‘i Filipino Women’s Club. “The annual ball has enabled the club to award seven, $1,000 scholarships this year. They go to two recipients from each of Kaua‘i’s public high schools, and one from a private school.”
Toni Umalla and Ashlee Nagahiro were named recipients from Kapa‘a High School. Kaua‘i High School awardees were Emma Burgess and Kadee Parubrub. Jolana Macadangdang and Maeani Arbilera were the recipients from Waimea High School. Sami Ofisa was the recipient named from a private school, Kamehameha School-Kapalama, O‘ahu.
Graduating from Kaua‘i High School, Ty Bayani Villanueva was named recipient of the $500 Laoag Saranay Association scholarship. Association president Amy Melchor-Tamayo partnered with the Kaua‘i Filipino Community Council in scholarship fundraising efforts. Villanueva has plans on attending Washington State University to study data analytics.
The Pangasinan Association with Marie Mendaro as its president, presented two $500 scholarships that resulted from the club’s efforts at fundraising by selling meal tickets from Mama Lucy’s restaurant.
Both recipients are graduates of Kaua‘i High School. Jeremiah Garcia plans on attending Kaua‘i Community College with a creative media major. Laurent Keith Villanueva will be heading to the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa to study computer science.
Victoria Perreira is currently a student at the Chaminade University in Honolulu studying forensic science. Perreira was the recipient of a $250 scholarship from the Abra Association of Kaua‘i, led by president Sharon Brioso.
