LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a high schools’ boys basketball programs each picked up their second wins on Tuesday night during Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation games contested at Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea and Kaua‘i High in Lihu‘e.
The Red Raiders swept the series over the Island School Voyagers when the Kaua‘i High junior varsity boys rolled over the Voyagers, 55-25, and the varsity Raiders were 56-30 victors.
Spectator-submitted photos of the scoreboard finals at Clem Gomes Gym displayed Kapa‘a taking a 56-34 win over host Waimea High in JV action. Another photo displayed the Kapa‘a Warriors claiming a 3-point margin, 52-48, over the Menehune, in varsity play.
Matthew Dobashi lit up the scoreboards for the JV Voyager effort, finishing with 11 points, including a trio of treys, followed by Kennedy Braun, the sole female playing in the KIF boys basketball program, lighting up the boards for six points, including one from outside the 3-point arc.
Elijah Racpan added five marks, including a trey, and Haley King ended with a pair for the Voyager effort.
Christian Vito and Barkley Gillman topped the JV Red Raiders, with Vito tickling the twine for a game-high 13 points, and Gillman adding 11 marks. Kanalea Yasutake finished with nine points, and Kapono Sullivan walked off the court with eight points.
In varsity play, Kameren Lee took the lead for the Voyagers with 10 points. Lucas Summerhays added eight points.
Zach Ing brought the Voyager fans to life with his 3-point buzzer beater after the Red Raiders held Island School scoreless for the first eight minutes of play while collecting 20 points. The Red Raiders were led by Joshua Rego, who dropped in 13 points, including a pair from outside the 3-point arc, during the run.
Rego finished with a game-high 24 points to lead the Red Raider victory. Syrus Delos Reyes added eight points to the Raiders’ win. Charles Maure finished with six points.
No scoring details were available from the Waimea-Kapa‘a encounters.
Kapa‘a next travels to Kaua‘i High on Saturday for a rematch of the second round opener. Waimea makes the trip to Wilcox Gymnasium in Puhi to face Island School. The JV matches at both sites tip off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity contests starting 20 minutes after the JV games.
