LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Museum announced that two Hawai‘i fashion designers are offering their wares at the museum this weekend. Nake‘u Awai, one of the first Native Hawaiian fashion designers, of Nake‘u Awai Designs, will be on the island, along with Colleen Kimura of Tutuvi, at the museum from 2 to 5 p.m. on each day.

Awai, a graduate of the Kamehameha Schools, is a well-respected Hawai‘i fashion icon. Awai started becoming involved with fashion after a choreographer in Los Angeles encouraged him to try costume design. He went on study and work with Bob Mackie and other big names in fashion, and returned to O‘ahu in the early 1970s, where he established his own fashion line.
Kimura is the owner and designer for Tutuvi, a tropical design collection of screen printed fabric, clothing and interior furnishings inspired by the plants, sea life and material cultures of Hawai‘i, Polynesia and the Pacific Islands.
