HONOLULU — Data released on Wednesday by the state Department of Health showed 63 new COVID-19 cases on Kaua‘i from Oct. 25 to 31, and 1,017 new cases statewide.
Kaua‘i’s seven-day, COVID-19 case average declined slightly last week to 10 cases a day, compared with 11 cases a day the prior week.
The test positivity rate on Kaua‘i was 9.1 percent, compared with 5.5 percent statewide.
No COVID-19 deaths were reported in the last week, while seven were reported statewide.
The majority of recent cases on Kaua‘i have been the omicron BA.5 subvarient — 82 percent during the two-week period ending the week of Oct. 8.
Newer strains, omicron BQ.1 and omicron BA.4.6, make up a smaller percentage of cases.
BA.4.6 has been found to be better at evading COVID-19 antibody therapies, and BQ.1 appears to be highly transmissible.
COVID-19 testing is available Monday through Friday at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihu‘e and other county locations.

DOH Kaua‘i District Health Officer Dr. Janet Berreman recommends that everyone eligible for a bivalent vaccine should receive one. The bivalent vaccine is currently available to individuals 5 and older who completed their primary vaccine series at least two months ago, or had their most recent booster at least two months ago.
