PO‘IPU — The Table 53 “You Dine, We Give” program returns following an absence created when COVID-19 shut down the island.
Table 53, located in the RumFire restaurant in the Sheraton Kaua‘i Resort, celebrated its return by presenting the August proceeds from the prime seats in the house to the Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women and Children — Critical Care Transport Program (Kaua‘i).
Xander Cabales, the Hawai‘i 2022 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Champion, accepted the $6,713.80 award on behalf of the Kapi‘olani Medical Center. Cabales, then 7 years young, developed toxic epidermal necrolysis, an extremely rare, life-threatening form of the severe skin disorder Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, and made a trip to Kaua‘i on Friday to accept the award.
The Neonatal and Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women and Children is a small and highly training specialty team that provides the safe transport of infants and children on O‘ahu from the neighbor islands and, if necessary, to the continental United States.
Specialty equipment that is able to provide lifesaving support, as well as adapt to different transportation vehicles, including ground and air ambulances, is a vital component to this specialty service in Hawai‘i.
During 2021, the Kapi‘olani Neonatal and Pediatric team transported more than 450 critically ill children, of which 46 percent were infants, to the neonatal intensive care unit, and 43 patients were from Kaua‘i. Through Oct. 17 of this year, nearly 30 patients have been transported to Kapi‘olani Medical Center from Kaua‘i.
