LIHU‘E — The free Keiki Bike &Skateboard Safety Day returns to the Wilcox Medical Center following a two-year absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year’s free safety education event will take place from 8 to 11 a.m. in the back parking lot located past Same-Day Surgery, and is open to the public.
“We are extremely proud and excited to be hosting Keiki Bike &Skateboard Safety Day once again,” said Jen Chahanovich, president and CEO of Wilcox Medical Center, and CEO of Kaua‘i Medical Clinic. “This fun, interactive event allows us to connect with our community and teach families about the importance of proper bike and skateboard practices that align with our mission to create a healthier Hawai‘i.”
Keiki Bike &Skateboard Safety Day is presented in partnership with several community organizations presenting a variety of educational, hands-on activities including a helmet fit station where Wilcox staff will fit and give away free dual-certified (approved for bikes and skateboards) helmets to keiki while supplies last.
With gear in hand, keiki move to the helmet decorating station before embarking on the bicycle skills enhancement course led by the Kaua‘i Path staff.
The Kaua‘i Skate ‘Ohana will take keiki through a skateboard skills enhancement course before bikes and skateboards go through the safety inspection stations to ensure the equipment is operating properly.
Education goes beyond bike and skateboard with the Wilcox Health blender bike that is part of the food and beverage stations.
Other resources include booths manned by the Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawai‘i, the Hawai‘i State Department of Health, Hawai‘i Life Flight, Hale ‘Opio Kaua‘i, Inc., the Kaua‘i Police Department, Keiki to Career Kaua‘i, Keala Foundation/Kaua‘i CrossFit, and LifeSave Kupono.
Highlight of the day is the giveaway drawings of free bicycles and skateboards for participants who qualify by completing their event passport.
