Alberto ‘Sonny’ Academia Ho‘opi‘i
Alberto “Sonny” Academia Ho‘opi‘i passed away at home on July 4, 2022, at the age of 87. He was born on Dec. 30, 1934, in Hana, Maui. to Elizabeth Kaiakala Ho‘opi‘i and Alberto Academia. He was raised by Damiano Lazaro Sr. He retired as a 1st Sgt in the Army National Guard also as a truck driver for AMFAC.
He was preceded in death by his wife Caroline Ho‘opi‘i, mother Elizabeth Lazaro, father Damiano Lazaro Sr., brothers Walter “Hale” Dela Cruz, Damiano “Gundy” Lazaro, Andrew “Bla” Lazaro, Patrick “Paleka” Lazaro, sister Peggy Wisneski, daughter Rowena “Lani” Stone and great-granddaughter Kaisa Hesapene Gramberg.
He is survived by his daughters Deborah Shimatsu of Kekaha, Norma Jean (Dean) Ho‘opi‘i-Manuel of Waimea, Camille (David) Hesapene of Hanapepe, sons Duke (Renee) Ho‘opi‘i of Alaska, Alberto Ho‘opi‘i Jr of Kalaheo, brother Anthony (Hilda) Lazaro of Hanapepe, sisters Mercy Lazaro and Barbara Frasco both of Kekaha, sister-in-laws Cecilia Lazaro of Kekaha, Nancy Dela Cruz of Wailuku, Maui, 15 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
A service is Saturday, Aug. 6, at St. Theresa Church in Kekaha, with viewing from 9 to 11 a.m. followed by Mass at 11:30 a.m. The family suggests casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Henrietta Daisy Leinani Gonsalves
Henrietta Daisy Leinani Gonsalves passed away at her home on July 4, 2022, at the age of 86. She was born on Jan. 13, 1936, in Kapa‘a. She worked as one of the “Lunch Ledehz” at Kapa‘a High and Intermediate and later worked at Flowers and Joys in Kapa‘a.
She was preceded in death by parents Isaiah Kalunakanawai and Daisy Ka‘auwai, mother and father-in-law Peter and Jennie Gonsalves, brothers John Keonaona Ka‘auwai, Joseph Ho‘onani Ka‘auwai, James Ho‘omaika‘i Ka‘auwai, Samuel Kaulia Ka‘auwai, Isaiah Kalunakanawai Ka‘auwai III, Kenneth Hokumalamalama Ka‘auwai, Abraham Lincoln Ka‘auwai, sisters Esther Rose Ka‘auwai Teraoka, Elizabeth Nellie Ka‘auwai Costa, Abbie Kananimalamlama Ka‘auwai Nabeshima and Maureen Kealoha Ka‘auwai Seagrove.
She is survived by husband Robert Fairbanks Gonsalves Sr., sons Robert (Gail) Gonsalves Jr., Douglas (Summer) Keola Gonsalves, Alan Kalama (Kelli) Gonsalves, daughters Roberta Leinani (Allen) Bactad and Joyleen TeeTee (Kachi) Rivera, brothers William King (Nan) Ka‘auwai, Bert (Blaze Ann) Ka‘auwai, sisters Annette Ku‘uipoaloha Ka‘auwai, Linda Napua Butchie (Dan) Iwamoto, sister-in-law Barbara Ka‘auwai, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, aunties, uncles, cousins and friends.
A service is at Kapa‘a First Hawaiian Church on Saturday, Aug. 13, with visitation at 9 a.m. followed by service at 11 a.m.

Rose Marie ‘Rose’ Carvalho Costales
Rose Marie “Rose” Carvalho Costales, 77, of Lawa‘i, passed away on July 9, 2022, peacefully at Wilcox Memorial Hospital. She was born on March 11, 1945, in Koloa. She worked at Waiohai Hotel, Poipu Beach Hotel, K-Mart and Sueoka Market.
She was preceded in death by parents John S. and Helen S. Carvalho, uncle Joseph “Joe” Dionizio Silva, brother Gilbert W. Carvalho and sister Lillian (William) Manago.
She is survived by husband Jose Costales Jr., sons Jose (Michele) Costales III, Jonathan E. Costales, daughter Elena M. Costales, grandsons Josiah Costales, Isaiah Costales, sister-in-law Patricia Carvalho, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
A celebration of life is at Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary Chapel on Friday, Aug. 5. Visitation begins at 9:30 a.m. and services at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Raphael Catholic Cemetery in Koloa. Due to COVID-19, face mask and social distancing are required.

Douglas N. Nagoshi
Beloved husband, father and grandfather Douglas N. Nagoshi of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away at home on March 7, 2022. He was born on March 22, 1942, in Kalaheo. He retired as Vice-President of Marketing and Customer Service at Suburban Propane located in New Jersey. He graduated from the University of Hawai‘i with a master’s degree in business administration. He began his career with Dillingham Corp.in Honolulu. His career led him to Sacramento, California, Memphis, Tennessee, Cincinnati, Ohio, Palm Harbor, Florida, Nashville, Tennessee and Whippany, New Jersey, retiring in Las Vegas, Nevada. While serving in the army in Europe, he volunteered to go to Vietnam. As a Vietnam Veteran, he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Vietnam Service medal.
He was preceded in death by parents Tetsuro and Shizue Murakami Nagoshi, sisters Yuriko (Wallace) Tasaka, Evelyn (Edward) Matsumoto, brother Kunio Nagoshi, nephew Guy Tateishi and nieces Ellen Tateishi and Lani Ardelle Weissenburger.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Pearl Iwasaki Nagoshi, son Matthew (Jessica) Nagoshi of Georgia, daughter Jennifer Nagoshi Harrell of Alabama, grandsons Anthony Harrell, Brian Harrell, Gabriel Nagoshi, Maverick Nagoshi, granddaughter Adaline Nagoshi, sisters Aster (Hiroshi) Tateishi of Kalaheo, Charlotte Nagoshi of Honolulu, Vivian (Michael) Morimoto of California, brother Richard Nagoshi of Kalaheo, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews of Hawai‘i and the mainland.
Interment will be at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu at a later date.
Marjorie Hisako Habu
Marjorie Hisako Habu, 90 of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away on July 30, 2022, at Sterling Ridge Senior Assisted Living Facility. She was born on June 12, 1932, in Lihu‘e. She was a housewife and enjoyed reading and gardening.
She was preceded in death by parents Tomotsu Arakaki and Makato Gusukuma, husband Masajiro Habu, who she proudly married on June 12, 1953 at ‘Ele‘ele Hongwanji Mission on Kaua‘i, brothers Charles Arakaki, Larry Arakaki, Joseph Arakaki, Kenneth Arakaki, sisters Sally Arakaki, Mabel Arashiro and son-in-law Vicente Fermin.
She is survived by son Derek (Hana) Habu, daughter Corine Fermin and brother Carl Arakaki.
Private Services to be held at a later date.

Sandra Leiko Sato
Sandra Leiko Sato passed away on June 27, 2022, at Hilo Medical Center at the age of 64. She was born on July 25, 1957. She worked in the office at Suisan for 40 years.
She was preceded in death by parents George and Violet Sato.
She is survived by sister Arlene Sato of O‘ahu, brother Clifton and Joyce Sato, niece Elysse and Jasen Doi, grandniece Camie and nephew Jordan (Kailee Carrillo) Sato.
Services were held.
