Mahalo, Pastor Matt Higa for bringing gubernatorial candidate Duke Aiona (wasn’t he on a live television debate the night before?) for lunch at Sone’s, Wednesday. A lot of lunchtime diners were surprised and thrilled to have Aiona stop by their table to wala‘au.
Pastor Matt said Aiona was on island for a meeting with church leaders and sign-waving before returning to O‘ahu. The super seniors, Ernie Domingo, Coach Peter Rayno, and Ronnie Matsumura were more concerned about Aiona having played for St. Louis basketball, and Merna Jim’s family (Kowen said he lives on O‘ahu) wondered who the celebrity with the lei was.
Kudos to the many Back to School Bash volunteers who made short work of all those school supplies that needed to go into the 2,500 backpacks that’s scheduled to be distributed, Saturday during the day-long event marking the end of summer vacation…teachers report to school July 26, and students go back as early as Aug. 1.
Liz Greenwood, remember that Quilter-to-Be?, got help from Bev Goteli in learning Hawaiian Quilt applique techniques before returning to San Pedro where she can work on projects before coming back. The Garden Isle Quilters exhibit and sale ends Saturday afternoon (still one more Friday where the exhibit at the Kaua‘i Society of Artists gallery is open until 7 p.m.)…same as the new hours for Aloha Friday where performers are on stage for 90 minutes, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
OK, Sunday, starting at 1 p.m. at the Kaua‘i Ocean Discovery, Foster Grandparent volunteer Ihi Kaneali‘i will be doing Book Reading of “The Three ‘Io Brothers and the Rising Tide (don’t know if NOAA intern Abigail Seibel made the Friday King Tide since the Kaua‘i Ocean Discovery is open until 5 p.m.)” written by Keri Kodama. Jean Souza said in addition to the “reading,” there are some books available for the “Listeners” to take.
