PORT ALLEN — There was one marlin, but it was too small to qualify for prizes, when the Port Allen Fishing Derby wrapped up with the final fish crossing the scales late last month at the Port Allen Small Boat Harbor.
Hosted by the Port Allen Fishing Club, a large field of 43 boats pulled out 45 ahi, six mahimahi, a pair of ono and lots of aku during the day of fishing from the Port Allen Small Boat Harbor.
Austin Galas, fishing aboard Kai Mali‘e, ended up the day’s big winner by taking three of the prize purses.
Galas was not limited to his second-place ahi, as his fish box revealed a 10.70-pound mahimahi that captured top honors in that division, just a bit more than half a pound better than his 10.05-pounder that copped him the second prize. He also had the second-place aku that weighed in at 22.95 pounds.
Alvin Tanigawa, fishing from the Lori T, took first place with the heaviest aku that settled in at 23.90 pounds, followed by Galas’s fish, and Shane Niau aboard the Teia Lei getting third place with a 21.60-pound aku.
Shane Jacinto, fishing aboard Jacinto’s, claimed the top purse for ono with his catch that settled at 26.90 pounds, followed by Matt Sullivan nailing second place in the division with a 19-pounder snared aboard the Mokulani.
Roger Palama aboard Pueo snagged the day’s big boy, a 168.95-pound ahi that earned him first prize in the class. Galas followed with a 160.90-pounder for second place, and Randall Takenaka aboard Soa-Bod-E walked off with third place for his 148.10-pound ahi.
Jayneen Laysa of the Port Allen Fishing Club expressed the group’s appreciation and mahalo for everyone entering the tournament and making it successful and fun for everyone.
