LIHU‘E — World Oceans Day is Wednesday, June 8, and Kukui Grove Center in collaboration with the Kaua‘i Ocean Discovery and the Kaua‘i Society of Artists is getting a head start by celebrating this Saturday, June 4.
Kaua‘i Ocean Discovery, only recently reopening its doors following the COVID-19 pandemic, will be offering free keiki activities between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
‘This week, our theme will be the honu,” said Jean Souza, the on-site Kaua‘i Ocean Discovery manager. “Our temporary tattoos are very popular among the keiki, so we’ll be sure to have some honu along with the humpback whale and others.”
Souza said that, in addition, Kaua‘i Ocean Discovery will launch a new, make-it-and-take-it, sea-turtle jigsaw puzzle activity as part of the celebration.
Additionally, keiki can enjoy fun ocean characters and a selfie station with Showtime Characters.
“This is also the final weekend of the Fourth annual Washed Up Marine Debris Art Exhibit at the KSA gallery,” said Melissa McFerrin-Warrack, KGC’s special events coordinator. “The exhibit features ‘beach trash’ artwork by a variety of artists in conjunction with the Surfrider Foundation.”
Washed Up is open daily from noon to 6 p.m., and from noon to 7 p.m. on Fridays. The exhibit closes on Friday, June 10.
Tiffany Gampong of The Storybook Theatre of Hawai‘i announced a World Oceans Day event in Kapa‘a on Wednesday, June 8 starting at 3 p.m.
“Happiness is hearing a story inside an inflatable dolphin and walking in a parade in a colorful costume on World Oceans Day,” Gampong said in her announcement.
The Storybook Theatre and the Dolphin Touch Wellness Center will host an afternoon of activities, special guests, ocean creature coloring, inflatables, stories and a costume parade and refreshments for the family, from 3 until 7 p.m.
Pre-registration is needed for the Zoom “Story of Jonah” from inside of Harmony the Whale that starts at 5 p.m. Registration can be done online at studio@storybook.org.
World Oceans Day is an international day that supports public interest in the protection of the ocean and sustainable management of its resources.
