LIHU‘E — The county Department of Public Works Solid Waste Division distributed prizes last week to winners of the county’s March Electronic Waste (eWaste) Contest.
Students from all over the island were tasked with turning in eWaste to Resource Recovery Solutions, which operates the Puhi Metals Recycling Facility, through the month of May, for a chance to win an assortment of prizes.
This year’s prize theme was focused on getting back outside and going on adventures. Many of the prizes were for adventure tours including ziplining, ATV rides, Napali boat tours and horseback riding. Some prizes for the younger students included Fun Factory gift cards and iPads.
“We were overjoyed to offer these special prizes to the students,” said Keola Aki, Recycling Programs coordinator. “We’re so excited that our local families get to have new experiences and make special memories together right here on Kaua‘i. Mahalo to everyone involved in this fun and educational event.”
Mayor Derek Kawakami attended the prize giveaway in the rotunda of the Lihu‘e Civic Center Mo‘ikeha Building, and congratulated the students for their hard work and care for the environment.
The contest was funded by a state Department of Health grant, awarded to the county to promote eWaste recycling on Kaua‘i via the state’s eWaste recycling law, which mandates that electronic manufacturers provide funding to recycle eWaste in the state.
The Solid Waste Division appreciates all the parents and students who participated in making a difference on Kaua‘i by keeping eWaste out of the landfill. The division thanks the state DOH for support and the tour agencies that provided free or discounted tour packages for the students.
Electronic waste recycling is available weekdays except county holidays from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Puhi Metals Recycling Facility, 3951 Puhi Road.
