LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i High School and Waimea High School took their respective matches when the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation started its second round over the weekend.
Playing at Vidinha Stadium Friday due to Kaua‘i High’s prom being held Saturday, the Red Raiders took 13-0, 13-1 wins over Island School.
Saturday, the Menehune traveled to the Ron Martin Field at Kapa‘a High, where they took games 4-1 and 12-1 over Kapa‘a High to preserve its one-loss record that earned them KIF first round title.
Menehune hurler Robbie Correa threw a one-hitter against the Warriors in the 12-1 nightcap, Kapa‘a’s Brock Blackstad getting the credit for the sole hit and run. Correa finished six innings of work by striking out four Kapa‘a hitters and allowing no walks.
Tresten Shigematsu led the Menehune hitting with a double and a triple, driving in two runs while scoring twice. No. 2 hitter Kade Erdman finished by scoring twice and getting a hit that drove in two RBI. Zyden Vea had two RBI on his single, and Anson Lazaro scored twice and had an RBI with his hit.
Earlier in the day, Shigematsu gave up one run on two Kapa‘a hits in the Menehune’s 4-1 win that came on seven Waimea hits. He closed seven innings with no walks and struck out seven Warrior batters.
Menehune shortstop Lazaro had the hot bat for Waimea, getting a hit for three RBI. Shigematsu helped himself in the batter’s box, getting one RBI with a single and scoring once.
Kian Rapozo wielded the hot bat for Kapa‘a, getting an RBI on his hit. Chysen Manintin got the other Kapa‘a hit.
Friday, Kaua‘i High pitcher Kaiyan Shigematsu struck out 10 Voyager hitters, walked one and gave up just one hit in the Raiders’ 13-0 win that came on 14 hits.
Wailele Kane-Yates topped the Kaua‘i High hitting by scoring four times, going a perfect 4-for-4 including a triple while driving in a pair of runs. Evan Batalucco scored twice and drove in two RBI on his two hits that included a triple. Talen Goias-Arzadon also had a long three-bagger while driving in a run.
Kane-Yates continued the firepower in Kaua‘i’s 13-1 win in six innings by powering a home run. He ended the outing scoring once on three hits with two RBI. Josh Guarin also drove in two runs on his RBI double while scoring twice.
Kaomea Inouye, scoring once, and Radon Sebastian, scoring twice, also marked RBI two-baggers for Kaua‘i in the win.
With the win, Kaua‘i High is one loss back of Waimea, and travels to the Cook Field on the Waimea High campus Saturday when the JV game goes off at 8 a.m. with a two-hour time limit. The varsity doubleheader follows starting at 10:30 a.m. followed by the nightcap following a 30-minute break at the end of the first game.
Kapa‘a takes on Island School Friday in a single game starting at 7 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium in Lihu‘e.
