KAPA‘A — Kapa‘a High School softball claimed Round 1 honors Wednesday following a Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation play-off contest against Waimea High School at the Kapa‘a High School campus.

One of the Lady Warrior athletes, Seijia Makanani, put in a strong performance on the mound, and in the batter’s box to lead Kapa‘a to its 10-3 win over the Menehune before a crowd that overflowed the softball diamond.

Makanani went the distance on the mound, limiting Waimea to just three hits, including a 2-run homer by Menehune shortstop Sianni Sakai in the third inning to knot the contest, 3-3. The other two Waimea hits came off the bat of Menehune catcher Kayla Prigge who banged singles in the second, and third innings with one Run Batted In, and left stranded.

Following the shaky start, where Makanani walked the first three Menehune batters and giving up all three Waimea hits in the first three innings, the Lady Warrior pitcher settled down to finish with five total walks while striking out 10 Waimea batters.

Makanani brought her performance into the batter’s box where she led all Warrior hitters with her 3-run homer in the fifth inning of the contest where Kapa‘a got its 10 runs on eight hits. The athlete wearing jersey No. 7 finished by scoring three times and getting a home run and a double with five runs being pushed home.

Kaia Davis-Caberto scored three times and had three hits, and Savanna Simons, who had peppered Round 1 with home runs, finished by scoring once, getting one hit with two RBI. Kai-Lee Kupihea also marked two RBI on her single hit, and Rhea Furtado scored twice on her singular hit.

With Round 1 settled, softball players have until April 6 to prepare for Round 2 when Waimea again makes the trip to the Kapa‘a High School diamond for a single match starting at 3:30 p.m.
