Three KIF girls soccer teams advance to D2 quarterfinals
HONOLULU — Kaua‘i High School girls soccer earned the top seed in the NIU Health Urgent Care+ Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division 2 girls soccer state championship games that opened Wednesday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex on O‘ahu.
With the top seed, the Red Raiders will face off against Kalaheo High School who defeated McKinley, 8-0, Wednesday on goals by Hilinai‘i Schenk who netted two goals, including one in the first minute of play, Kilinahe Schenk who found the net four times, Haylee Manoa and Sarah Swendsen.
The other two Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation teams, Kapa‘a and Waimea, will advance following victories, Wednesday night.
Led by four goals in the first half, Kapa‘a advanced following a 7-0 shutout over Waiana‘e.
Hanna Wamsley topped the Warrior scoring with two goals, both in the first half. Tracelle Iwamoto and Mia Kaneakua-Inoshita added Kapa‘a scores in the first 10 minutes of play.
Sailor Keahiolalo joined Wamsley with two scores, in the 13th and 19th minutes with Ella Carroll icing the shutout in the 24th minute.
Kapa‘a will face the DII No. 3 seed Leilehua High School, Thursday afternoon in Waipio.
Waimea, the third KIF representative to the D2 tournament, also advanced in the Wednesday opening games by defeating Nanakuli High School, 3-1 behind goals from Jasmine Semblante, who already committed to playing soccer for the Hawai‘i Pacific University, and sturdy forward Kendra Knapp.
Semblante found the sole goal for the Menehune in the first two minutes of play, and added her second net in the 53rd minute. Knapp found the net in the 49th minute. Glorinda Respicio saved the Nanakuli shutout by scoring in the last two minutes of play.
The Menehune also faced a seeded team, No. 3 Pac-Five, Thursday afternoon at the Waipio fields.
