LIHU‘E — An online portal for fireworks-permit applications opens this week, according to the Kaua‘i Fire Department.
Fireworks-permit applications will be available online only starting Wednesday, Dec. 15. Officials are not accepting permit applications before then. Further details on the new application process are expected soon.
“Transitioning to an electronic platform was made to enhance COVID-19 precautions, save paper and allow customers to apply at their convenience,” KFD Fire Prevention Capt. Jeremie Makepa said. “It will also create a more-efficient system for our personnel and improve our data-collection.”
The cost of a fireworks permit remains at $25. Applicants must be at least 18.
Fireworks and firecrackers may only be ignited on private property between 9 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 1 a.m. on Jan. 1.
Only licensed pyrotechnicians with proper permits are authorized to ignite aerial fireworks.
It is illegal to set off fireworks on public property, including streets, sidewalks or parks. Removing the powder or pyrotechnic contents from any firework is prohibited.
Although the following items are classified as fireworks, no permit is required to purchase them: snakes, sparklers, fountains, cylindrical or cone fountains, whistles, toy smoke devices, wheels and ground spinners and other similar products.
All aerial luminaries, also known as flying lanterns or flying luminaries, are prohibited.

Fireworks have been going off all over the island for about a month, some sounding like bombs. Like most other processes on island, the firework permit process is a joke, nothing is enforced.
