WAIMEA — A PBS documentary featuring a Kaua‘i family will screen at the Waimea Theater this Tuesday, in honor of Veterans Day.
“Sky Blossom,” directed by journalist Richard Lui, follows families from around the U.S. as they care for loved ones during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Subjects include a brother and sister from the island’s Kapanui family, who look after their veteran grandfather.
“This is a beautifully crafted film about five extraordinary families. Their bravery, self-sacrifice, devotion and love are an inspiration. There are more heroes per square inch in ‘Sky Blossom’ than there were in ‘Saving Private Ryan,’” said actor Hyde Pierce, the film’s executive producer, in a press release.
The documentary highlights the challenges that faced in caring for loved ones, and provides a raw and rare view into the lives of 24.5 million children and millennials who step forward as caregiving heroes.
The Waimea Theater screening will begin at 6 p.m. Nov. 9 and is free to the general public. The film’s director and producers will be in attendance.
A webinar featuring PBS Hawai‘i President Ron Mizutani, who cared for his Lihu‘e-born, veteran father after he suffered a stroke, and Kamaile Kapanui, who is featured in “Sky Blossom,” will take place Wednesday, Nov. 10. It can be accessed on skyblossom.com and the AARP Hawai‘i Facebook page.
“Sky Blossom” will also be broadcast on PBS Hawai‘i on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, at 8:30 p.m., and be available for streaming on the PBS Hawai‘i app.
