WAILUA — The county Department of Public Works Wastewater Management Division advised that a wastewater effluent exceedance occurred Tuesday at the Wailua Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The measured enterococci level has exceeded the permitted limit.
“Beach-goers are advised that contact with the nearby ocean may cause illness,” said Acting County Engineer Troy Tanigawa. “Wastewater officials are working with the Department of Health to follow all health and safety guidelines, and signs will be posted in the affected area.”
Testing will continue, and the public will be informed when the WWTP is back in compliance.

Why can’t we build adequate treatment facilities that contain effluent and stop polluting streams and the ocean? This is a problem in communities accross the USA. IS this just another example of inept government.
If the treatment plant was run by a private business they would be fined into oblivion. Being a “government run operation “, it’s just “Oh well, we’ll keep testing and let you know when you can fish and swim again”. Very Sad!
Translated… there is sewage ( kaka ) in the ocean beaches. Ick.
The sewage is from Wailua homes. It is leaking into the Wailua river. What engineer will attempt to fix this? It will happen again.
