The fourth edition of the “Homeowner’s Handbook to Prepare for Natural Hazards” is now available for free at public libraries and select county offices across Kaua‘i.
The “Homeowner’s Handbook to Prepare for Natural Hazards,” published by the University of Hawai‘i Sea Grant College Program, provides detailed information on how to prepare homes and families for hurricanes or other natural hazards. The handbook also covers flooding, including evacuation planning, home mitigation, recovery and insurance.
Hurricane season in Hawai‘i runs from June to November.
After bracing for the potential impacts from several recent storms, homeowners in Hawai‘i are all-too familiar with the importance of preparing their homes prior to a natural hazard.
Ruby Pap, Hawai‘i Sea Grant’s coastal-land-use extension specialist on Kaua‘i, said: “We are excited to partner with Hawai‘i public libraries and the County of Kaua‘i to make this important resource more available to the public. Since hurricane season is just two months away, now is the time to start any needed retrofits to your home.”
Dennis Hwang, lead author of the handbook, said: “The handbook has useful tips on gathering your 14-day, emergency-supply kit, creating evacuation plans based on known hazard zones, and strengthening homes with hurricane clips and window protection.”
