Samuel ‘Jun’ Martinez Ramos Jr.

Samuel “Jun” Martinez Ramos Jr., of Hanama‘ulu, passed away at home on March 20, 2021, at the age of 42. He was born in Lihu‘e on Dec. 20, 1978. He worked as a driver with The Kaua‘i Bus.

He was preceded in death by father Samuel Ramos, mother Renee Ramos, grandparents Primitivo and Maria Ramos and Crispin Evangelista and Anicia Cruz, sisters Michelle and Leilani Ramos, and cousins Cres Ramos Jr. and Aaliyah-Rose Ramos Pasa.

He is survived by wife Kanani Akui-Ramos, children Alexis Ramos and Pua‘ala, Lei‘ala and Kapono Akui-Ramos, nieces Alyssa Lardizabal and Xandra Ramos-Masumoto, grandmother Juana Ramos, uncles Reynaldo (Marjorie) Ramos, German (Mila) Ramos, Crescencio “Cres” (Becky) Ramos and Jerry (Emily) Ramos, aunties Gladdy (Angel) Palaroan, Sheanne (David) Michaud and Cleo (Andrew) Mulligan, in-laws Darvin (Pua‘ala) Akui, and numerous cousins.

A celebration of life is Saturday, April 17, at Immaculate Conception Church. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. with Mass at 10 a.m.

Garden Island Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mark Funamura

Beloved son, Mark Funamura, June 15, 1963 – April 2, 2021, passed away at Wilcox Medical Center.

He was preceded in death by mother Barbara, and brothers Stanley and Chip.

He is survived by father Dan, sister Joni Funamura-Sasil, and niece Justice Funamura-Sasil.

A private service will be held at a later date. The family requests no koden (monetary gifts).

Garden Island Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.

Jose Libed Layaoen

Jose Libed Layaoen passed away at his Kilauea home, surrounded by family, on March 28, 2021, at the age of 95. Born on Sept. 19, 1925, in Baay, Batac, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he worked at Kilauea Sugar Plantation and retired from Lihu‘e Plantation.

He was preceded in death by parents Genaro and Modesta Layaoen, stepmother Segundina Layaoen, brother Efren Layaoen, sister-in-law Resurreccion Layaoen and brother-in-law Resty Parubrub.

He is survived by loving wife of 75 years Cristeta Gallego Layaoen, sons Francis (Lilay) Layaoen of Kilauea, Jesse (Margie) Layaoen of Kilauea and Jose Jr. (Nuevelyn) Layaoen of Kilauea, daughters Eliza (Cresencio) Garcia of Kilauea, Welly (Larry) Pasion of Santa Ana, California and Diane (Clark) Collier of Paola, Kansas, brother Mac (Dely) Layaoen of Koloa, sister Magdalena Layaoen Parubrub of Kekaha, grandchildren Lani (Aaron) Cummings, Frank “Kimo” (Christie) Layaoen, Liza (Jeremy) Pope, Lynn (Jason) Nelson, Eileen (Dennis) Cadiente, Julie (Robert) De Mond, Cris Garcia, Lawrence Pasion, Lianne (Keola) Taniguchi, Christine (Andrew) Abalos, Leah (Bryson) Ragsac, Matthew Collier, Allyson (Alex) Mooney, Jordan Layaoen and Joshua Layaoen, 26 great-grandchildren, and many nephews, nieces, loving friends and relatives.

A viewing is at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home Saturday, April 17, from 3 to 5 p.m. A celebration of life is at New Hope Kilauea Sunday April 18, at 10 a.m., with burial to follow at noon at Kilauea Japanese Cemetery. Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Bruce Rapozo

Bruce Rapozo, 63, passed away on March 5, 2021, at his home in Lihu‘e. He was born on Nov. 14, 1957, and was a talented artist and welder.

He was preceded in death by parents Arthur and Frances Rapozo, brother Steven, and sisters Carol and Susan.

He is survived by brother Gregory Rapozo and sister Roz Rapozo, nephews Travis and Brandon Fukumoto, niece Dionne Watts, and six great-nephews and nieces.

A celebration of life is Sunday, April 18, at 10 a.m. at Kaiola Canoe Club at Niumalu Beach Park.

Maria Butin Balisacan

Maria Butin Balisacan passed away on March 18, 2021, at the age of 90, at home.

She was born on Dec. 8, 1930, in the Philippines.

She was preceded in death by husband Tomix Balisacan.

She is survived by sons Virgilio (Connie) Balisacan of Puhi, Salvador (Sheila) Balisacan of Hanama‘ulu, daughters Lolita (Marciano) Nerizon of California and Martina (Vic) Gano of Hanama‘ulu, 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A walk-thru visitation is Saturday, April 17, at Garden Island Mortuary, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., with a celebration of life at 11 a.m.

The family suggests casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Due to COVID-19, social distancing and masks are required.
