LIHU‘E — The Lawa‘i man involved in a fatal two-vehicle crash on Christmas Eve on Kaumuali‘i Highway near Knudsen Gap tested positive for drugs and alcohol the day of the crash, the Kaua‘i Police Department confirmed Friday.
Toxicology results for Sandon Igne, 31, were positive for the presence of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. Igne had a blood-alcohol level of 0.133%, KPD reported. The state’s legal limit is 0.08%
On Dec. 30, Igne was arrested on charges of manslaughter and three counts of negligent injury in the first degree, and released pending further investigation, according to KPD.
According to KPD’s preliminary report, around 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 24, Igne, operating a 2011 Toyota Tacoma, was traveling westbound when the truck veered onto the shoulder before crossing back onto the westbound lane and then into the eastbound lane, hitting an oncoming sedan.
The cause of the crash has yet to be determined for this on-going active investigation, KPD said Friday.
Igne, according to past court records, has faced several traffic infractions and crimes between 2008 and 2019, including speeding tickets and delinquent vehicle taxes.
As a result of the crash, 49-year-old Hanama‘ulu resident Eugenia Villanueva suffered fatal injuries, and a 71-year-old rear passenger suffered serious, life-threatening injuries.
The front passenger of the Nissan sedan, a 19-year-old female of Hanama‘ulu, suffered serious injuries and was admitted to Wilcox Medical Center. The 19-year-old driver of the Nissan sedan was also treated and released.
Following the crash, Igne was transported to Wilcox with minor injuries and released.
