Grandma Staci Gill of Canada flashes a shaka and readies for a picture with grandson Jahzeah Castillo, who eyes the no-contact delivery of his fresh coconut from “Holoholo Nelson” Ka‘ai during the Thursday edition of the farmers’ market at The Coconut Marketplace in Waipouli.

Wilawan Meephol unpacks produce at the Watchara Farm booth Thursday as she takes the place of her mother who is on vacation from the farmers’ market at The Coconut Marketplace in Waipouli.

Mahalo, Alice Parker, for being better than SpellCheck…it’s “jicama,” and she said it’s really good in fruit salad because it’s crispy, and it’s just coming in at Mark Jones’ farm (check out the farmers’ market at The Shops at Kukui‘ula Wednesday afternoons, or the Pau Hana Market Monday at 3 p.m. at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e).

“Holoholo Nelson” Ka‘ai does the farmers’ market (they do Tuesdays and Thursdays) at The Coconut Marketplace in Waipouli (can always check on lunch at the Island Country Market, and more specialized cuisine at Coconut or Bobby V’s), where he brings in the birds (even hungry chickens) by flinging those bird-sized bites of coconut. Nelson said he’s been retired from Kaua‘i Electric for more than 25 years, and loves doing the coconuts at the Marketplace (Grandma Staci Gill of Canada was thrilled to get a coconut for her grandson Jahzeah Castillo, who got his first taste of the niu. He hasn’t decided on how he like it yet. He’s there ahead of the market start and is usually the last one to leave, wrapping up the cordage for Darryl Low.

Mahalo to Smiley Punzal (his sons outgrew their ju-jitsu apparel) for the tip on the opening of Brezee’s (owned and operated by his friends Larnelle and Lenny Brezee, who were tied up getting orders done on opening day) in Hanama‘ulu. Anyone got the ono for pastele and gandule rice?
