KAPA‘A — Appointments and volunteers are being accepted for the Trough or Treat Halloween event being presented by the Kaua‘i Animal Education Center in Kapa‘a on Saturday, Oct. 31, from 1 to 7 p.m.

“We feel like traditional trick-or-treating will be another holiday that Kaua‘i will have to put off due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” KAEC volunteer Julie Owen said in an email.

“We are holding a Trough-Or-Treat event for children and families on the farm. This will be a COVID-19-compliant, walk-thru where the children and families can meet the animals on the farm and receive some treats from some of our local businesses and some of our local churches.”

The KAEC is the only farm-animal-rescue facility on Kaua‘i that provides services for the community to learn, interact and engage with a menagerie of animals in a park-like setting.

“We are the only nonprofit farm-animal-rescue on Kaua‘i,” Owen said. “We not only rescue farm animals, but also have outdoor-enrichment projects for children, work with at-risk youth, grow native plants and trees on property and are actively involved in our local community.”

Free to families, the appointments are necessary to limit crowd sizes and allow for social distancing. Face masks must be worn by everyone above the age of 5. Appointments are being accepted on Eventbrite, or by visiting the KAEC website at

Volunteers are welcome to help, and businesses wishing to contribute can also visit the KAEC website.

This is a family-friendly, drug- and alcohol-free event. Donations will be welcomed at the door.

“We are asking for donations, cash or gift cards, from those who are able to because that is how we feed and shelter our animals,” Owen said.
