KOLOA — The county Department of Public Works and Goodfellow Bros. LLC announced that full closures of Maluhia Road from Sunday morning through Thursday afternoon are scheduled to continue through Oct. 15, subject to weather and other factors.
During these closures, the detour route to and from Koloa Town to Kaumuali‘i Highway is on Koloa Road and Piko Road.
‘Oma‘o Road is a narrow, residential road that is not intended to be used as a detour route and not designed for high volumes of traffic or truck traffic. The speed limit is 25 mph for the entire length.
Signs have been placed on ‘Oma‘o Road prohibiting through trucks from using ‘Oma‘o Road. Officers from the Kaua‘i Police Department will be patrolling ‘Oma‘o Road, enforcing the speed limit and truck restriction.

Yeah, right. The only people that adhere to the speed limit are adults living on Omao. All the other drivers treat the road as the Omao Speedway! The only thing missing are NASCAR type fiery crashes. Average speed is approximately 42 +/- 3.

The signs were removed 2 months ago (very old photo), although the “No Trucks” sign has reappeared 2 days ago. Still trucks. I guess no one can read or no one cares to obey the law/signage. I clocked a dump truck at 50+ two days ago.
With the constant speeders, living on Omao Road has been a nightmare. The Maluhia Road closure has heightened the nightmare 3X to 4X!
