LIHU‘E — The National Weather Service has issued a red-flag warning for the leeward portions of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau, meaning conditions are ripe for fires in those areas, in effect until 6 p.m. today.
The warning may be extended, dropped or modified as conditions develop.
A red-flag warning means critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or will occur. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
The warning does not predict new fire starts.
Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly in these conditions, according to the NWS. Outdoor burning is discouraged.
Reach the NWS automated weather line at 245-6001, or see weather.gov/hfo.
