KEKAHA — The Kaua‘i Fire Department extinguished a structure fire in Kekaha on the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 2.

No injuries were reported. Two residents were displaced. They declined assistance from the American Red Cross.

Firefighters from the Kalaheo, Hanapepe, Lihu‘e and Waimea fire stations, a battalion chief and the KPD Prevention Bureau responded to the incident.

According to preliminary reports, firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire on Ho‘omau Street in Kekaha at approximately 7:40 a.m., and arrived on the scene at approximately 7:50 a.m.

Once on the scene, fire personnel discovered smoke exiting from the windows of the dwelling. Fire crews also witnessed the owners of the dwelling and good Samaritans utilizing garden hoses, attempting to extinguish the fire.

Once the fire was knocked down, firefighters utilized a positive-pressure ventilation fan to remove smoke from the structure. The fire was confined to the room of origin in the single-story home.

After assessing the incident, crews cleared the scene at approximately 9:50 a.m.

Fire inspectors estimate the damage to the structure and its contents to be roughly $150,000.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
