Guam’s Joint Information Center reported 14 new confirmed cases Friday, bringing the total to 411, the Pacific Daily News reported.
The number of infections is thought to be far higher because many people have not been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected with the virus without feeling sick.
For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some — especially older adults and people with existing health problems — it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
The new policy is the first time the governor has imposed tighter restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic since the island gradually started easing restrictions in May.
There will also be additional restrictions on social gatherings. The number of people allowed at indoor or outdoor gatherings will be reduced from 50 to 25. Funeral services will be limited to 10 people, with viewings available exclusively for immediate family members. At-home wakes will also be prohibited.
The governor said many of the new cases have been linked to funeral gatherings.
Dining in at restaurants will continue as normal, but will be closely monitored, the governor said. She said many restaurants have readily imposed pandemic restrictions and have voluntarily disclosed positive cases among staff members.
Bars have not exercised the same level of compliance, the governor said.
