LIHU‘E — The first Lihu‘e team of baseball players aged 18 and below got off to a good start with a convincing 7-0 win over the Kapa‘a team Saturday at Vidinha Stadium.
Lihu‘e was scheduled to play a doubleheader to open the five-week season for the four-team league. All of its games wil be played at Vidinha Stadium.
Youth play under the Protect Our Nation’s Youth auspices for those 18 and younger, said Mark Domingcil, who came to check out the field for umpiring needs.
“There is no Cal Ripkin,” Domingcil said. “There were a couple of teams that dropped out, so the season was called off.”
The Kaua‘i summer league consists of two Lihu‘e teams, one coached by Spencer Yates, the Kaua‘i High School baseball coach, and the other coached by Darwin “Zoom” Bukoski, a member of the Kaua‘i High School baseball coaching staff. Kapa‘a is coached by Bryan Aiwohi, the Kapa‘a High School baseball coach, and Waimea completes the league.
Waimea was scheduled to meet Lihu‘e in the afternoon doubleheader.
In addition to the Saturday doubleheader, the league also plays single weekday night games on Tuesday and Thursday, with the first pitch starting at 6:30 p.m.
