HONOLULU — Hawaii health officials said Monday recent clusters of the coronavirus detected in the state have been associated with people not wearing maks and not social distancing.
Nine people were infected after attending a large indoor class at a gym, said Bruce Anderson, the director of the state Department of Health. The gym has since closed and people who might have been exposed there have been notified.
Another 12 people have tested positive after a Hawaiian Airlines training session. Two of the 12 are family members of people who attended the session.
Hawaii Gov. David Ige’s emergency order encourages people to wear a cloth face covering as recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Honolulu requires employees and customers of businesses to wear masks. As of last week, the city is now requiring people to wear face coverings while outdoors in public when it’s not possible to stay 6 feet apart from others.
Hawaii has the fewest number of COVID-19 cases among the 50 states. On Monday, Hawaii reported seven additional cases for a total of 1,030 since the beginning of the pandemic.
