LIHU‘E — Kamehameha Schools-Kaua‘i distributed 300 food packages to its students and families from three sites on the island Friday afternoon.
“Each site — Anahola, Lihu‘e, and Kaumakani — has a hundred packages apiece,” said April Taguiam, one of the volunteers distributing the packages in a drive-thru format at the Lihu‘e offices. “This is just the second week we’re going this. Last week, we had a friendly competition on who could do the most. We lost. But this week, we’re in the lead over Anahola.”
Each food package is designed as a meal that can feed up to four people, Taguiam explained. We got help from the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank, who supplied the hamburger for this week’s distribution.
“The package also includes brown gravy, mashed potatoes and a dessert, pudding for this week,” Taguiam said. “And, in addition, they get a box of fresh produce and a block of butter. It’s a pretty good deal and helps take care of a family’s meal.”
Verified families simply drove up, and the food was placed inside the car with no contact.
The Lihu‘e offices proved to be a popular pickup point, with the first few cars containing families from the Kaumakani and Anahola preschools.
“Friday is shopping day,” said Bricen Moritsugu of Kamehameha Schools. “People come in to do their errands and shop on Fridays. Additionally, a lot of people in Lihu‘e send their children to the Anahola preschool. They can pick up in Lihu‘e without having to drive out to Anahola for food.”
Moritsugu said there are two more distributions scheduled, June 19 and July 2. Distribution times at all three sites are from 1 to 3 p.m.
