LIHU‘E — Myrvie Buster, described as the “new voice of Garden Island Federal Credit Union,” was thrilled with the announcement of scholarship awardees Thursday morning, the day before public high schools’ alternative graduations.

“This is really good,” Buster said. “We have a representative from each of the public high schools. And, coincidentally, they’re all boys.”
Fred Ryl Adella of Waimea High, Kyler Arruda-Sukehira of Kapa‘a High, and Gerald Salud of Kaua‘i High were announced as recipients of the three scholarships provided by the credit union that has branches in Lihu‘e and Koloa.
Adella, recently announced the recipient of the Kaoru &Kikumi (Nakaue) Fujita Endowed Scholarship administered by the Waimea Alumni &Friends Foundation, is planning to study biology as an entry into medicine at Minot State University in North Dakota. He would like to one day be able to provide affordable health care on Kaua‘i.
Arruda-Sukehira is a valedictorian for the Kapa‘a Warriors. Graduation ceremonies start after 5 p.m. today on the school’s campus.
He was one of two valedictorians receiving the GIFCU scholarships, and will be attending the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, studying medicine.
Salud is the other valedictorian, serving when the Kaua‘i High convoy starts at 3:30 p.m. from Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School and ending at Kaua‘i High. He said the group that includes more than 270 students being driven by their parents will adjourn to the campus to watch the virtual graduation that will be aired by Hawai‘i News Now starting at 5:30 p.m.
Following the graduation, Salud will be heading to Biola University in Southern California to study cinema/media arts and psychology.
