Instead, Leong’s Meat House in Kapa‘a offered free chili bowls to children all day during its open hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“There is no grab-and-go today,” said Kristen Leong of the Leong’s Meat House. “We raise our own beef, and this was a good way for us to give back to the community.”
A steady stream of hungry patrons waited patiently in the rapidly-mounting morning heat, some overflowing to check out the offerings of the Aloha Lani Farms tent laden with fresh vegetables.
“I didn’t even know about this,” said Lee Anne Nago, who waited with her friend and a brood of keiki. “My brother-in-law shops here, and he told us about it. This is good. We could even walk over.”
Leong, working with a crew jamming to prepare chili bowls, said this was not the first time Leong’s Meat House has hosted a giveaway.
“Last time, we did a poke-bowl giveaway,” Leong said. “That was pretty successful with about 150 bowls being distributed. This time, since we raise our own beef, we thought we would do chili bowls for the keiki. It’s just a small way for us to give back.”
