WAILUA — The Kaua‘i Senior Citizen Softball Association league President Joe Bertucci said the league chose to cancel both practices and games for the next 60 days in their response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are going along within the CDC recommendation of groups no more than 10,” Bertucci said. “We as a board decided this (Wednesday) afternoon to cancel all games and practices for at least 30 days to see where this all falls out.”
The softball team currently plays its games in county parks, and has participated in a total of eight weeks in the 26-week season. It has suspended play and practices in county facilities until it gets permission from the county to resume play.
Kaua‘i County canceled all recreational park usage for a total of 60 days, according to KSCSA league Coordinator Mike Curtis.
“We’re not playing without the county’s permission,” Curtis said.
KSCSA is scheduled to host the annual State Senior Softball Tournament during the first week of August in Hanapepe nd nearby fields.
Curtis said whether KSCSA will host the state tournament, which will feature off-island teams, is a pending decision that won’t be decided until May 1.
“May 1 will be D-Day,” Curtis said.
KSCSA carried on playing its last games on March 14 before the mandatory shutdown.
“We continue our decision-making based on relevant considerations,” Curtis said before their decision to shut down on Friday, March 13, before the league chose to cancel practices. “One fact is that senior softball participants are at high-risk. The board of directors (and) team captains will continue to act based on information available at the time.”
