HONOLULU — All interscholastic practices will be added to the list of suspended activities and competition in an effort to minimize the potential community spread of the COVID-19 virus, the Hawai‘i High School Association announced, Tuesday morning.
“The member leagues are working together to make the health and safety our top community priority and to do our part in containing the spread of the virus,” said Chris Chun, the HHSAA executive director.
The HHSAA executive board, including its member leagues — the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, Interscholastic League of Honolulu, the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation, Maui Interscholastic League, and the O‘ahu Interscholastic Association — met via video teleconferencing, Tuesday as part of a planned weekly briefing to continually evaluate the public health threat.
Earlier, the HHSAA effected an interscholastic competition suspension on March 16 that will be effective indefinitely.
The practices moratorium is added to this list of suspensions.
The HHSAA executive board remains in contact with government leaders in order to determine the best course of action before allowing as many as 12,500 student-athletes statewide to resume spring sports.
The next HHSAA executive board meeting is scheduled for March 23.
